Title:

What is the biggest PROFESSIONAL spectator sport in the world?

What brings in the most money and is seen by the most people in the ? I know that most people play football (soccer) but my Dad is convinced that auto racing is the #1 spectator PRO seen in the . I have a hard time believing it as I find car racing extremely boring. I don’t love soccer either but at least the people competing are excellent athletes. So what PRO is seen by the most people and brings in the most money in the ?
Any statistical data to back up an answer would be appreciated, a $1 bet is on the line here!

Ethan, I believe you're right when you point out that there are people who can balance a sports habit with other social and civic responsibilities; just as there are plenty of responsible drug users. As such, I'd certainly never advocate banning spectator sports. However, I worry that it is a tipping point for a substantial sub-set of people for whom the energy poured into their sports fix is what might have been channeled into a more meaningful path. As such, I'd assert that an individual's rejection of spectator sports is a net loss for the oligarchical system…

It used to be that you had to be an accredited person in your field. (An established body had to verify your membership).

Law, Science, Medicine, Teaching, Accountancy and so on.

It has been degraded so that anyone can have this lable.

To answer the question: These days you can call yourself a professional and nobody gives a damn. Even then some people give more credence to an appearance on TV than to any ability.
