A Brief History of Parachutes. (Skydiving, Parachuting).

The physics behind a parachute is easy to understand. But making real ones are far from easy. Making toy parachutes seem like a good idea for an easy science project but experimenting with different is not as easy as tying strings to a fabric. Making parachutes for use in real life takes a lot of risk and accuracy.

Before modern parachutes gave us the thrill of skydiving it took a lot of guts for early investors to design parachutes that work and not fall them to their death. The history of parachutes went through a lot of development and a few deaths.

The modern parachute was invented by Louis-Sébastien Lenormand in 1783. However there are earlier versions of parachutes created by a few centuries earlier. Before the silk parachute was invented, there were basic designs built that worked in the same principles.

Parachutes, past and present

The earliest was a cloak attached to wooden struts. It was made by an Arab Muslim named Arem Firman in the 9th century. He jumped from a tower in Cordoba and suffered only minor injuries. Parasols were used in China for entertainment. It allows entertainers to jump high places and float to the ground.

Leonardo da Vinci also sketched parachute with conical designs. It served as an escape device to enable people to jump from burning buildings. In 1617 Faust Vrancic was the first person to be able to make a successful jump with a parachute.

Jean Pierre Blanchard developed his own parachute as a means to get off a hot air balloon. His first demonstrations were done with a dog as the passenger. He later on unintentionally put his invention to the as he escaped from his ruptured hot air balloon.

In the 1790′s he made a parachute out of silk which were more stringer and lighter than previously used materials. Early parachutes were made of linen with a wooden frame.

Andre Garnerin invented the vented parachute in 1797 and made a successful jump using Blanchard’s design. The vented parachute improved stability during descent. Gleb Kotelnikov invented he knapsack parachute. It was popularized by Katchlen Paulus and Paul Letterman.

The first major use of parachutes was in the military. It was by artillery spotters and pilots. Unfortunately the parachutes were heavy and pilots were not able to use it entirely. The German Air provided parachutes to their pilots. Unfortunately there were many setbacks that most of the pilots died when using them.

Leslie Irvin was able to invent

the only reason us guys use pick up lines are because we don’t know how girls tick,we find out how one girl ticks but there are another thousand waiting in the wings,if girls would open up to guys,we wouldn’t need to use those cheesy pick up lines, guys are hard, they act tough but most of them(like my awesome 12 year old self)are sensitive underneath

By no means do I wish that to happen…I am simply looking at the market objectively from 1932 from an EW perspective. A 96% decline in market value would be disastrous, however that extreme decline would only happen because of the extreme advance we had from DOW 570. We had an unprecedented expansion in creidt. It was the extreme expansion of credit that was unprecedented, and the bankers bankers that perpetuated it would be to blame, not the correction of the advance. The correction would be returning the market to more normal levels.

  5. that food is not good in general for the dog overall health, irregular bowel movements lets you know that he is not tolerating the food well, but if food is not switched out slowly it does cause diarrhea.
With the soft it tends to get stuck in between the teeth more so you have to brush your dogs teeth if you feed him soft food.
this site is a good one to read over about dog food it is written by an animal nutritionist.

This one easy… of my level.

The links you put I also visit often. I think you read HKEJ? I'm a big fan of HKEJ. This is the only thing in HK I miss.

I'm learning Yeung's Tai chi, not in a in-depth manner, i.e., just postures and movements. Do you have any good Tai Chi books in mind? Would like to check it out in HK.

please also post more on Tai chi and/or martial arts.

Nope. Person A threantens to go after the personal life of Person B. This angers person C because Person A has in the past made it clear that personal lives had nothing to do with their job, becasue they where caught in an embarresing, WORK RELATED event. Person C reminds Person A and his followers that Person A has reason to not want to get into a discussion of what aspects of personal lives are fair game and not.

Person D, looking for a reason to think everyone but him is Bad, attacks person C.

This algorithm is broken. Imagine two squares whose intersection is a small square in the upper right of one of the squares. This algorithm will choose the max left (upper square), max top (upper square), min right (lower square) and min bottom (lower square) giving a rectangle that stretches from the bottom of the lower square all the way to the top of the upper square.

It also misses the case Tim Nicholson points out where one rectangle completely covers the second rectangle.
